Placenta Honoring Rituals

In the traditions that inform my practice, labor, and birth are understood as a rite of passage that honors the mystery of life and death, expressed in the sacred triad placenta, baby, and mother. Honoring the placenta is an essential part of this ritual, and in itself, a ceremony of mourning and veneration.

Healing with the Placenta

Placental medicine has a holistic component to it that many people tend to ignore. Like many traditional practices, colonial minds have erased spirituality and turned it into an exclusively utilitarian procedure. It is not about making capsules to prevent postpartum depression but about honoring the spirituality, power, and medicine that has been brought to you by this guardian of your child. Contrary to the allopathic beliefs around the uses of the placenta in the same way for all women, is the fact that you might not benefit from certain preparations. Also, the healing that deep in your heart you know is needed for you and your family might not come just from using the placenta as any other bottled supplement.

Just honoring your placenta by planting her can bring ancestral healing to your family's distorted identity, ill relationships, roadblocks to abundance, and lack of hope for the future.

If due to the circumstances of your health previous to your birth, or due to a challenging birth experience your body has faced depletion, malnourishment, or wounds, reincorporating your placenta orally within your early hours of postpartum may be the best way to honor your placenta, yourself, and your family.

Like these, many aspects might influence your decision about the kind of ritual you need. Please, give yourself the time to learn about these rituals and make sure all your questions have been answered before committing to honoring your placenta in a specific way. Let your heart and your placenta guide you.

Placenta-honoring is a Spiritual Practice

For the people of the Abya Yala, the fertile land known today as South America, the traditions around honoring the placenta are vast and rich in mysticism. The placenta is feared and revered, read, elevated, preserved, eaten raw, cooked, burnt, or planted depending on the different beliefs around her medicine and spiritual powers.

What are YOUR ancestral beliefs about the placenta?

What you and your ancestors believe will greatly determine your openness to receiving your placenta's medicine and healing. If unsure, at least offer your placenta a place to rest by planting her in ceremony.

The three traditions that inform the placenta-honoring rituals I provide to your family

Andean Inga/Quillacinga/Timana

My grandmothers from my mother's side follow the Andean tradition of burying the placenta and blood from birth in the family's chakra (Kichwa for herb and vegetable garden) along with an Avío (offering), to bring abundance and nourishment to the Earth and the family as a consequence. The Placenta, like all parts of us humans, belongs to the Earth Mother, Pachamama.

African Balanta

From my father's side of the family, the ancient traditions of Balantas revere and plant the placenta next to the elder's home, or in secrecy in the place of power that best suits the spiritual interests of the family for the baby. The placenta is the bridge for the "Faiyeh", life power, to enter from the ancestors into the incarnated body of the newborn.

My maestra partera Zaraswati Zambrano, from the School of Andean Midwifery Biopartera, taught me her family's art of omphalomancy. I learned from her and her teaching team of artists, chemists, and biologists a ritualistic approach to artistic creations with the placenta and western technologies for placental medicine making.

The two rituals that will always benefit Latino families

Those of us who have been categorized as Latino, regardless of our ancestral origins, have experienced and continue to experience institutional discrimination and violence. Most of us have long histories painted with all the tonalities of trauma one can imagine, yet we are still here, we are resilient and want to do our best to turn our peaceful, dignified, and empowering birthing and parenting vision a reality

And offer your placenta back to the Earth

Returning your placenta is an ancestral duty. It reconnects the soul of the placenta, the guardian of your baby, and your baby's soul with the Earth Mother, her love, abundance, magic, and freedom, all the aspects of your right to live that were taken away from your ancestors due to colonization. When you offer your placenta in ceremony, your blood ancestors rejoice, and the ancestors of the land anchor your child so that they can grow and flourish with dignity and power.

Then read your placenta,

It gives you a great understanding of your child's gifts and life purpose in relationship to you, your family, and the world. This helps you to support them in being themselves at their fullest because their existence and expansion heal us all.

Both these rituals are included in all my birthkeeping support packages. 🥰

If I am your birth keeper, you will have them ❤️ No need to book separately
